Abstract

The background of this research is that education is not only aimed at learners to have the ability of intellectual intelligence, but also moral intelligence. In the development of character, education becomes fundamental things that are very important for learners as the identity that directs in the formation itself so that the need for character education evaluation as consideration of how far learners can understand, feel and behaved. This study aims to determine the implementation and evaluation of character education in SMP Negeri 5 Yogyakarta. This research is an evaluation research with a combination approach of qualitative and quantitative (mixed methods) using concurrent embedded model (unbalanced mixture). Qualitative research conducted to understand the phenomena, events, social activities naturally, while quantitative research used to measure the effectiveness of character education programs in SMP Negeri 5 Yogyakarta. Data collection methods were used observation method, in-depth interview, documentation and questionnaire. Program evaluation in this research is use CIPP evaluation model (Context, Input, Process and Product). The result of the research shows that: (1) the effectiveness of component of evaluation context of character education program in SMPN 5 Yogyakarta were considered effective because the urgency of program implementation is caused by factors that can help students, teachers, cultures in school and community in facing the character education problem of students. The purpose of this program is to make people aware that character education is very important to be act upon because it sees the concerns of the moral degradation in students. (2) The effectiveness of the input component of character educations program evaluation is effective because the character education program is prepared with the needs of the students, and the availability of facilities and infrastructure that support and assist in the implementation of the character education program. (3) The effectiveness of process components has declared effective due to good school control. To the supporting factors of the school environment so that character education becomes a good and conducive culture by internalizing the routine activities, and the good cooperation in the implementation of education programs character in SMP Negeri 5 Yogyakarta either by head master, teacher, learner, and all civitas academica. (4) The effectiveness of the results of character education programs is declare very effectively based on the score obtained is 96.18 from the highest value 120. On item and self-assessment of this component on average gets very effective response from learners.
