Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in layoffs (PHK) in the city of Yogyakarta. There is no longer a source of income received, causing the victims of layoffs to experience an economic shock. The demands of meeting the needs of the lives of laid-off victims take strategic steps that can support survival in the midst of a pandemic. The survival ability in Islamic economics emphasizes the individual's ability to achieve a balance between income aspects and utilization to meet needs. In addition, in every Islamic economic activity, the survival taken must adhere to the provisions of Islamic law so that the actions taken can bring benefits for human survival. This study seeks to answer the main questions: How are the conditions of layoff victims affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Yogyakarta, how is the impact of the formation of layoff victims in the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Yogyakarta from an Islamic economic perspective. The method used is field research using an Islamic economic perspective. Based on the results of the study, it was shown that the condition of the layoff victims in the city of Yogyakarta experienced an economic shock and affected their survival. The formations carried out by layoff victims in the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Yogyakarta carried out strategies, passive strategies and network strategies. The active strategy is in the form of looking for other jobs such as being an online motorcycle taxi driver and selling. Passive strategies are carried out in the form of reducing expenses, using savings to meet needs. The network strategy is in the form of borrowing money from friends, parents and relatives. From the stategy survival ability carried out by workers who have been laid off in the city of Yogyakarta in carrying out life in the midst of a pandemic, it is appropriate in the Islamic economy, both in the form of obtaining sources of income and utilizing sources of income to meet the needs of life without any elements of evil that have been carried out.
