Abstract

This research is motivated by accessibility problems faced by the disabled, especially the deaf in aspects of life related to worship. Most deaf Muslims have difficulty in worshiping due to their limited ability to hear and speak. The purpose of this study was to determine the accessibility of worship for deaf Muslims in the city of Yogyakarta, both from the problem of accessibility of worship, obstacles to worshipers and aspects of worship including prayer, reading the Qur'an and listening to Friday sermons. This research uses descriptive-qualitative method with a case study approach. The selection of informants as subjects in this study was carried out by purposive sampling. Data was collected through observation, interviews and documentation. The stages of analysis in this study were carried out by reading the entire data, coding, making small themes, and presenting them in narrative form, as well as interpreting the data. This study concludes: first, the accessibility of worship for deaf Muslims in the city of Yogyakarta is still less accessible. According to Deaf's view, the fulfillment of accessibility in places of worship seen from a physical point of view is sufficient but not from a non-physical perspective due to the unavailability of a Sign Interpreter, especially the translation of Friday sermons. Second, deaf Muslims have not had access to appropriate worship facilities and support them in studying Islam such as memorizing prayer readings and reading the Qur'an. Third, most deaf Muslims do not complete Iqra and only a few can read the Qur'an even though they are not fluent. This is due to their limitations in listening and speaking, lack of interest and motivation, different levels of ability and understanding of the Deaf so that they have difficulty learning Iqra and there is no opportunity to study further. Fourth, the barriers congregationals faced by the deaf are attitudinal/attitude, communication, liturgical and programmatic barriers, except architectural ones.
