Abstract

In addition to functioning as a source of Islamic law, hadith also represents the richness of Arab language and culture. One hadith that is particularly interesting from a linguistic perspective is the hadith narrated by Abu Dawud No. 5011, which juxtaposes bayān with magic (siḥr) and poetry (shi‘r) with wisdom (ḥikmah). At first glance, these terms appear to be contradictory. This study aims to understand the meaning of this hadith from the perspective of Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s theory of hadith interpretation and to examine its relevance to contemporary Islamic communication practices. Using a library research method, data analysis is conducted through hadith takhrīj, sanad and matn criticism, and semantic analysis using the ma‘ānī al-ḥadīth approach. The results of this study indicate that the term siḥr in this hadith is used metaphorically (majāzī), describing the rhetorical power of language that influences human emotions and thoughts. Meanwhile, poetry can be understood as a medium of communication that contains wisdom when it is grounded in goodness. This hadith is relevant to contemporary Islamic communication practices, particularly in emphasizing the importance of honesty, ethics, and responsibility in the use of language and rhetoric. Therefore, it contributes to the development of wise and responsible principles of Islamic communication.
