Abstract

This study aims to find out the scholarly communication strategy of the academic community in University of Muhammadiyah Gombong and the utilization of institutional repositories in scholarly communication of the academic community based on Use and Gratification Theory in University of Muhammadiyah Gombong. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. Research informants were selected based on purposive sampling consisting of lecturers, students, and librarians in University of Muhammadiyah Gombong (UNIMUGO). Data collection techniques based on observation, interviews, and documentation. Test the validity of the data using source triangulation and technical triangulation. Whereas the analysis technique uses descriptive analysis through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study are the scholarly communication strategy of the UNIMUGO academic community begins with forming a team, conducting research according to academic needs, determining targets and topics, compiling scientific papers, selecting communication facilities, and selecting publication media. These strategies are carried out through direct and indirect communication, both with friends and through the media. The media used for information retrieval are ejournals, google scholar, institutional repositories, and books in the UNIMUGO library. Whereas the publication of scientific works is carried out in journals, proceedings, and institutional repositories. Based on the approach through the Use and Gratification Theory, the utilizatiton of institutional repositories in the scientific work of the academic community at UNIMUGO is seen from five needs, namely cognitive, affective, personal integration, social integration, and escape needs. From these five needs, it is known that the institutional repository at UNIMUGO is used as a learning medium by lecturers and referrals in the final job search of stundents by looking at research that’s been done by academic community before. Utilization of institutional repositories is carried out by browsing information through the title and type of study program. The results of the search are used for discussion materials on the creation of scientific works. In addition, the utilizatition of institutional repositories is also used to complement the needs of lecturers in publications and completion of lecture assignment’s for student. To further enhance scholarly communication activities at UNIMUGO, it is necessary to increase the commitment of research and publications on the academic community whose results are published in the institutional repository.
