Abstract

The absence of a father figure can affect on the development of individual attachment styles in early adult women. This study aims to describe the adult attachment style in fatherless early adult women. The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach, involving three female informants who were selected through purposive sampling technique and passed the initial screening stage to ensure suitability with the required criteria. The informant criteria include; 1) female, 2) in the early adult age range (18-40 years), 3) experiencing fatherless, either due to death, divorce (with the father not active in parenting), or the father leaving the family permanently. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observation. The results showed that differences in age at the time of father loss and reasons for absence affected the meaning of loss and the quality of emotional relationships. All informants have insecure attachment styles, namely preoccupied and fearful, characterized by high affection needs, emotional dependence, fear of abandonment, ambivalence in relationships, and less adaptive emotional regulation. Self-modeling and othermodeling tended to be negative, although there was an awareness to form healthier relationships in the future.
