Abstract

This research aims to determine the factors causing damage to library materials and efforts to prevent damage to library materials at the Sukoharjo Regency Archives and Library Office. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. The selection of informants in this study used the Purposive Sampling technique. Data collection techniques use observation, interviews, and documentation. The data obtained were then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's theory of analysis, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion adjustment. The results showed that the factors causing damage in the Sukoharjo Regency Archives and Library Office were from internal factors of paper with low material quality and external factors, namely, temperature, and relative humidity, lighting that caused bleacing action, insects, and factors. This study also showed that efforts to prevent damage to library materials caused by rats and termites were carried out by maintaining cleanliness and providing camphor and spraying baygon. Prevent human-caused damage by switching media and providing encoding to users. Prevention of damage caused by book binding is carried out re-binding. Prevention of fire damage by anticipating the provision of light fire extinguishers (APAR). The recommendations in this study are the factors that cause damage and efforts to prevent damage to library materials, including in preservation activities, can be developed again and carried out according to the right methods, so that library materials are avoided from damage and the public can enjoy the information and knowledge contained in library materials for longer.
