Abstract

Self disclosure is a process when individuals provide information about themselves that is usually hidden to others. The process of self disclosure usually occurs when individuals interact directly. But along with the times, self disclosure can now be done through social media, one of which is Instagram. The multiple account Instagram feature raises the phenomenon of using a second Instagram account as a medium for self disclosure. This study aims to find out self disclosure through social media by Yogyakarta Mengajar volunteer students as users of a second Instagram account. The theory of this research is self-disclosure “Johari Window”. This study used a qualitative approach and the method used was phenomenological. The technique of collecting the data using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results of this study explain that in self disclosure, the biggest aspects are open areas, blind areas, and hidden areas. There are self-disclosure functions, namely self expression, self purification, social validity, relationship development, information sharing, and information storage. The positive impacts that arise when self-disclosure are self knowledge, ability to overcome difficulties, communication efficiency, and relationship depth. While the negative impact is in the form of personal and social rejection and experiencing intrapersonal difficulties
