Abstract

This thesis explains the Maiyah phenomenon and its implications for the conversion process and religious maturity of the Maiyah Mocopat Syafaat Yogyakarta. The conversion in question is the theory of Walter Houston Clark which states that conversion is a change in attitudes, behavior and religious actions to a deeper direction. This thesis attempts to answer the questions: (a) What is the role and position of Maiyah in the social circle of Indonesian society? (b) What is the conversion process for the Maiyah Mocopat Sayfaat Jamaat? (c) What are the implications of the values taught by Maiyah for the religious maturity of the Maiyah Mocopat Syafaat Congregation? This research is a qualitative descriptive-analytical type with a phenomenological approach. The data obtained in the form of primary and secondary data. Four congregations of Maiyah Mocopat Syafaat are the subjects of research in this paper. The four worshipers have different backgrounds, ranging from losing the meaning of life, former thugs, former Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) activists and also alumni of traditional Islamic boarding schools who finally found peace through Maiyah. From their experiences and thoughts, I analyzed religious maturity using Gordon Allport's theory. The results provide data that their conversion experience is unique and personal but has similar stages. These stages include a period of calm, a period of instability, a period of conversion, a period of peace and expression of life after conversion. Their experiences and thoughts show that they have a fairly good religious maturity when viewed from Gordon Allport's 6 criteria of religious maturity. They meet the criteria, which include having a broad perspective and being open to criticism, having the ability to motivate, having moral consistency, having an integral view of life, having comprehensive thinking and being heuristic.
