Abstract

This dissertation studies the relationship between Indonesian Muslim and Catholic of Manggarai, Flores East Nusa Tenggara post reform period (2000-2019). The three primary research questions are: 1) What Muslim-Catholic dynamics occurred in Manggarai before and after reform? 2) Why was there a post reform change of Muslim-Catholic relationship dynamics? 3) What preventive actions were there to minimize the tension and conflict? The objectives of the study are: 1) to uncover post reform dynamic of Muslim and Catholic relationship of Manggarai; 2) to discover the reasons behind the change of the dynamics; 3) to analyze the way to prevent and minimize the high tension and conflict. It is a case study that employs historical and sociological approach. Data were collected through history literature study and field research (observation and interview) before being analyzed using qualitative descriptive method. The research resulted some points. 1) There was a different pattern of Muslim and Catholic relationship before and after reform. During new order era, it was inter-subjective (subject-subject) pattern, while indifferent and functional (subject-object) one was dominant after reform era. 2) The change of Muslim and Catholic society dynamics was due to the agglomerating inter-dominated feelings between the two religion communities in which four factors triggered: first, the tendency of each religious organization to present religious exclusivism to each community; second, the unparalleled religious education infrastructure with the condition of religion teachers; third, the people’s choice on exclusive religious content in social media with no critical thoughts; fourth, local political contests. 3) The efforts to prevent and minimize the high tension dynamics were channeled through the existing social and cultural assets and media both government and civil structures, such as religious figures, public figures, custom figures, and young interfaith figures. Thus, the inter-dominated feeling was placed as the post reform dynamic root of indifferent which was eventually fragile from tension and conflict. This, therefore, completes earlier studies on the reasons behind the high tension and conflict in the Muslim-Catholic relationship in Indonesia. Mujiburrahman said that the cause of tension and conflict between Muslim and Christian is threatened feeling, while Fatimah Husein mentioned exclusive and inclusive religious points of view are the dominant roots whether Indonesian Muslim and Christian relationship is harmonious or not. Ahmad Muttaqin discovered that the effect of media construct against Christianization and Islamization issues triggered the conflict, while Zuly Qodir and B. Singh mentioned religion convert and ‘Merry Christmas’ greeting did. In this study, the dynamics of Muslim and Catholic relationship colored by inter-dominated feeling was prevented and minimized by a mindset that the researcher calls it ‘interaccommodation’. Previous scholar (Ayelet Shachar) proposed the term transformative accommodation to manage diversity problems occurred in every country. In this context of Muslim-Catholic relation dynamics in Manggarai, however, the researcher thought the term inter-accommodation was more appropriate. The term is used to emphasize the presence of the need to be open, to invite and attend, participate, and understand each other so that a religious community senses the feeling of being part of another religious community. In addition, inter-accommodation mindset is needed in public celebrations to strengthen the values of unity in diversity with which no single religion community feels abandoned nor secluded. Besides, inter-accommodation fits with netted society, Manggarai people’s character.
