Abstract

The study entitled “The Story of Prophet Sulaiman in the Koran (A Stylistics and Narratology Study)” is backgrounded by typical verses from the Koran talking about prophet Sulaiman. The verses have preference and typical speech deviation. The narrations of Sulaiman are fragmentative and extend to several different surahs. In addition, the relevance between the story of Sulaiman and the monotheism teaching brought by prophet Muhammad has not been formulated in linguistic and literature studies as a whole. Hence, to discover the secret behind the language style and the narrative structure of the story, stylistically and narratologically recitation is needed. This study is trying to answer four questions: (1) Why does the Koran apply typical preference and deviation in telling the story of Sulaiman? (2) What narrative structure is used? (3) What technique of plotting and point of view are presented? (4) What semiotic and its relevance does the story have with monotheism brought by prophet Muhammad? To answer the questions, a qualitative descriptive study was carried out. Based on the object of study, the study belongs to a library research with qaşaş verses the objects of material. Limited by the story of prophet Sulaiman from the Koran, the verses constitute surah Şād (38) 30-40, al-Anbiyā’ (21): 78-82, Al-Naml (27): 15-44, Saba' (34): 12-14 and Al-Baqarah (2): 102. Using a listen and note technique, data were collected before being analyzed with translational equivalent technique. Theory of stylistics within the frame of Syihabuddin Qalyubi’s story from the Koran and the theory of Şârif Mazârî narratology were the analysis tools. Through stylistic analysis and narration of the story of the prophet Sulaiman, this study argues that stylistic analysis needs to be combined with narratological analysis to reveal the significance of the story and also to explain the meaning of Qur'anic story, both from the linguistic and literary aspects. The findings of this study; First, al-Qur’an uses typical preference and deviation when narrating the story of Prophet Sulaiman due to the number of episodes and the richness of plots. Second, the structure in the story of prophet Sulaiman begins with several miracles received, the tests of the miracles, and the success of his mission. Prophet Sulaiman was tested by the miracles he received. He was even consciously aware that the miracles he recieved were kinds of tests (liyabluwanī masykur am akfur). Third, the rich-plotting tecnique was constructed with functional occurrence and the Narrator (Allah) Himself, from the “I” point of view, directly involved in each episode. Fourth, there are 12 semiotic meanings in the story of prophet Sulaiman and the relevance to monotheism mission brought by prophet Muhammad is symbolically represented in many aspects of life like power and leadership. Stylistically, the study has an implication for the story-element-emphasis function and the two-type dialogues – active and passive. From narratology aspect, it has an implication for i’jaz narratology of the story of prophet Sulaiman. The research contributes to the development of literature study in the sense that it combines stylistics and narratology in the story from the Koran which the researcher calls it as al-Uslūbiyyah al-Sardiyyah.
