Abstract

The study aims to analyze factors influencing the vulnerability of both sharia and conventional banks in ASEAN according to the financial system of Hyman Minsky. In addition to the external factors that constitute macro economy variable comprising interest rate, inflation and economic growth, the study carried out for 10 years (from 2010 to 2019) modifies the theory of bank vulnerability stability by including good governance as one of bank vulnerability defining factors whilst the internal factors constitute credit risk, liquidity risk and profitability. The population and samples were ASEAN nations applying dual banking system, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand and the Philippines. Pane data regression with two similarities between sharia and conventional banks were implemented, and total bank asset a control variable. The results showed that risk of credit gave positive influence significantly to the vulnerability of sharia bank but not to conventional one. On the other hand, risk of liquidity, profitability and good governance brought significant negative influence to both banks’ vulnerability. Inflation and economic growth variables did not influence their vulnerability. Sharia banks’ vulnerability was not affected by interest rate, but the rate gave negative significant influence to that of conventional ones. The introduced variable good governance brought negative influence significantly to the vulnerability of both banks. This proved the significant role of good governance in the increase of banking industry investment for economic growth and development of a nation. The study is expected to be an input and recommendation for ASEAN nations when launching public policies and improving the quality of good governance. Banking industry investment in those countries increase in return. Monetary development, banking sector in particular, is expected to bring about positive effect to the nations’ economy.
