Abstract

This study was conducted against the background of a low level of early reading skills of children aged 5-6 years. Therefore, a method is needed so that children can learn to read more easily when entering the next level of education. PAUD Islam Darul Ulum provides reading learning activities, namely through the implementation of the learning method of reading without spelling to improve the initial reading skills of children aged 5-6 years. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of the spelling reading learning method in improving the initial reading skills of children aged 5-6 years and describe the advantages and disadvantages of learning to read without spelling in improving the initial reading skills of children aged 5-6 years at PAUD Islam Darul Ulum. This research uses descriptive qualitative research as a research approach. The subjects of this study were students at PAUD Islam Darul Ulum who addressed at Brajan RT 03 Potorono Banguntapan Bantul. In the age group of 5-6 years, which consists of 8 children, teachers of PAUD Islam Darul Ulum and principals of PAUD Islam Darul Ulum. The research techniques used are interviews, observations, and documentation. The data was analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Data validity techniques use method triangulation and data source triangulation. The results showed that: (1) the implementation of the method of learning to read without spelling went well, the report on the development of early reading skills of children aged 5-6 years was 3 children with excellent development scores (BSB), 3 children with growth scores as expected (BSH), 2 children with growth starting to develop values (MB). (2) The implementation of the implementation of reading using a book of learning to read without spelling consists of 2 volumes. Students learn to read while playing and read using books interchangeably. (3) The advantages of the learning method of reading without spelling in improving the initial reading skills of children aged 5-6 years are as follows: make it easier for children to learn to read, children become fluent in reading, children get more vocabulary, children are easier to get to know reading. While the disadvantages of learning to read are: children have difficulty in recognizing a series of letters in the form of syllables or words, children have difficulty in pronouncing diphthongs and double phonemes, such as ng, ny, kh, au, oi and so on, children will find it difficult to string together the sounds of one letter with another, after the child masters the series of syllables, the child will have difficulty returning to eliminate the spelling process so that it will hinder their ability to read normally.
