Abstract

This study aims to describe how the art of teaching Newton's Laws is carried out by Walter Lewin in his classical mechanic lecture series. This type of research is library research. The validity of the data used is source triangulation with content analysis method. The application of this method are carried out in three steps, namely (1) Making a transcript (dialogue) of the Newton Law learning video conducted by Walter Lewin, (2) Analyzing the video by watching the video repeatedly while reading the transcript, (3) Pouring the analysis in the form of writing that divided into 5 parts, namely an overview, syllabus, demonstrations carried out in learning activities, learning patterns of Newton's Law, and pedagogical analysis. The results showed that Walter Lewin's art of teaching in Newton's Law was taught by using a conservative approach (teacher-centered approach), so the learning was centered on him (direct learning strategy) and dominantly used lecture and demonstration methods. One of the lecture methods he uses is to give examples of Newton's First Law which he did without demonstration. Meanwhile, to give an example of an event that applies Newton's second and third law, he did it by demonstrating a ball he was holding with his classroom's inertial frame of reference, hanging a mass on two ropes at a certain angle, and applying a force to a system of blocks that hanging on a string. The example of Newton's third law, he did with a demonstration of releasing a balloon that had been inflated upwards so that the balloon would fall when the air ran out, heating the Hero's Engine with fire, making a simple Hero's Engine using an old soda can filled with water and hung it on a string, and throwing a tennis ball up and catching it. Therefore, students rely more on memory process and ways of thinking or called the information process model.
