Abstract

The role of mass media and the development of information technology have a positive impact on everyday life. However, it is undeniable that technological sophistication can also cause negative effects in the form of misuse of communication tools and media that are detrimental and violate the privacy rights of others. In this case, the mass media also contributes significantly to the quality of information consumed by the public. Many mass media industries have abandoned idealism, are not oriented to the public interest, focused on profit alone and the speed with which news is produced. In reporting on cases of sexual violence, the media often provide news that creates gender inequality. Broadly speaking, the above reality occurs in most of the mass media in Indonesia, which places women in a marginal position and creates revictimization of women victims of sexual violence. This study uses a library research method, which is descriptive analytical, namely by describing the main issues that arise in reporting cases of sexual violence in the mass media. The normative juridical approach is carried out in relation to the provisions of laws and regulations such as the Criminal Code, Law Number 4 of 2008 concerning Pornography, Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Transactions and Electronic Information, Law Number 13 of 2006 concerning Witness Protection and Victims as well as Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning the Crime of Sexual Violence. This study also analyzes how the mass media represent victims of sexual violence with the discourse analysis of Sara Mills, as well as critical linguistics by Roger Fowler which reinforces the hidden patriarchal ideology by the mass media to the public. Based on the results of the study, it can be seen that there are already a series of laws that play a role in providing protection for victims of sexual violence in the mass media. However, the reality is that there are still many cases that are constrained by a legal vacuum, inequality in access and protection to discrimination that corners victims from the legal system, state apparatus and community stigma. The mass media also produces news that does not have a gender perspective, resulting in injustice and oppression many times for the victims. Mass media coverage instead focuses on conflicts of interest and power that place women as passive objects, with gender bias and stigmatization paragraphs embedded in the mass media in every news report.
