Abstract

The debate on revelation discourse has widely improved since the first and the second centuries and concerned to the theological debates. From these debates, a certain concept of revelation was dogmatically taken for granted by the majority of Muslim community. This situation makes some modern Muslim scholars were interested in rethinking the concept of revelation. As the reaction to retain the classical Muslim view of revelation, Abdullah Saeed argues that rethinking this concept revelation is unwarranted. On the other hand, he suggests a new theory of the Qur’a>nic revelation. This research elaborates Saeed’s thought of revelation and its contribution to Qur’a>nic studies. It also discusses the historical background of his view of revelation and its alteration. This library research uses descriptive-analytical method. Saeed’s work entitled Interpreting the Qur’a>n: Towards a Contemporrary Approach, Al- Qur’a>n: An Introduction and Rethinking Revelation as a Precondition for Reinterpreting the Qur’a>n: a Qur’a>nic Perspective become the primary sources of this undergraduate thesis while the works related to the revelation discourse and Abdullah Saeed’s biography or his thoughts become the secondary sources. This also uses the documentation in the method of collecting data and data reduction, taxonomic analyses and interpretation in the technique of data analyses. This research concludes that Saeed’s view of the Qur’a>nic revelation is divided into two phases. First, he said that such a revision of the view of revelation is unwarranted. The Second, he offers a broader understanding of revelation that takes into account its socio-historical context. Its two phases of notion result from his education and social life backgrounds. First, his hometown social backgrounds, his qualification in Arabic language, and his education in Medina influence him while he retained the standard Muslim’s view of revelation as much as possible. The second, his new citizenship, his qualifications and educations in Australia influence him while he applies a modern approach to the revelation as he uses the socio-historical approach. The contribution to the Qur’a>nic studies comes from Saeed’s emphasizing that the most important thing is toward a broader understanding of revelation, not the revision on it.
