Abstract

This research aims to analyze and describes about the development of SLiMS Software by using five laws of library science concept from S.R. Ranganatan. The method of this analysis is by using qualitative method. The subjects of this research are SDC (Senayan Developers Community) and the SLiMS user, while the object is SLiMS Software development as seen from five laws of library science concept. There are two data resources of this research; they are primary and secondary data. The primary data are collected through a deep interview to the informants, while the secondary data are collected through documentation and observation in the field. In this research, there are seven informants who consist of two key informants from SDC and five supporting informants from user community. For analyzing the data, the writer uses Miles and Huberman theory with its three steps of (1) Data Reduction, (2) Data Presentation, and (3) Drawing the conclusion and verification. This research is based on the five laws of library science concept which consists of books are for use, every person his or her book, every book its reader, save the time of readers and the library is a growing organism. This concept is then developed by the researcher by changing the subject and the object of the previous concept into SLiMS is for use, every user his or her SLiMS , every SLiMS its user, save the time of the user, SLiMS is a growing application. The result of the analysis shows that the first law of the development is oriented on the user by giving easiness in using, modification, and learning. The second law shows that the development is focused on the way to get the software and the regulation of software user’s freedom. The third law of the development is done appropriate with the global feature of the ILS/ LMS application and also to make it possible to adopt several features from some applications out of ILS/ LMS. The fourth law, the development s oriented in the user time saving which consists of library organizer and librarian. The fifth law, the development is focused on the new products which support the library activities. Thus, the development based on community and business model which also improves give its own economic value for the developers or the community.
