Abstract

This study examines the sources of knowledge and political perceptions of persons with visual impairments. Political knowledge and perception are factors that play an important role in understanding political participation. The research method used is a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. Data was collected by using interview, observation and documentation techniques. There were five informants involved in this study and were persons with visual impairment aged 17 years and over. The results of the study show that people with visual impairments have sources of knowledge through several ways, including through trial and error, authority, personal experience and is influenced by the speed of access to information. In addition, it was found that informants who took higher education had more complex sources of knowledge. The knowledge possessed by the informants has an influence on their political perceptions. The five informants have a negative perception of politics. People with visual impairments perceive politics negatively because politicians only care about themselves, are corrupt, do not have the capability, commit abuse of office and the accessibility of people with visual impairments in politics is still minimal. Negative perceptions are also influenced by internal and external factors. Internal factors that influence perceptions include interests, individual attitudes and inappropriate expectations. Meanwhile, external factors that influence negative perceptions are the information obtained and the intensity of the stimulus.
