Abstract

Social media is one of the things that affect the process of adolescent development. Uninterrupted use of social media due to self-dissatisfaction with life and lack of parental attention can lead to feelings fear of missing out. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and neglectful parenting on fear of missing out in adolescents. The sample in this study amounted to 164 adolescents who were taken by snowball sampling technique. The data collection tool in this study used 3 scales, namely the Self-Esteem Scale (29 items, α= 0.937), the Neglectful Parenting Scale which has been adapted (38 items, α= 0.944), and the Fear Of Missing Out Scale which has been adapted (10 items, α= 0.810). The data analysis technique in this study was multiple regression analysis for the major hypothesis and Pearson product moment correlation for the minor hypothesis. The results of the F test analysis showed a significance value of 0.411 > 0.05, which means that there is no relationship between self-esteem and neglectful parenting on fear of missing out in adolescents. Therefore, it can be concluded that the higher or lower self-esteem and neglectful parenting do not correlate with fear of missing out in adolescents.
