Abstract

This study aims to explain how the implementation of the Diffusion Innovation theory as a Education and Cultural Departement’s communication strategy to preserve the spiritual traditions of the Banjar tribe in Hulu Sungai Selatan district, South Kalimantan. Since all Indonesian people must preserve local traditions in this modern era, the government has a duty as a driver to encourage the community to participate in the maintenance of local heritage. The researcher uses the Diffusion of Innovation Theory by Everett M. Rogers, with qualitative research methods and accompanied by data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observations, and documentation studies. In the interviews, the researcher involved key informants Baserah, M.Pd, and Hj. Erni Yulia, S.Pd as part of the culture departement that manages cultural heritage in Hulu Sungai Selatan. Researchers used source triangulation techniques by conducting interviews with informants from the community. The results of this study indicate that the strategy of the Department of Education and Culture in preserving spiritual traditions for the people of Hulu Sungai Selatan, by creating various innovations and using certain communication channels, has been accomplished. Furthermore, the period until the innovations accepts by the community goes rapidly and well affirmed.
