Abstract

Alif Rebo Wage (Aboge) is a group of Muslims in Java who have the Islamic socio-religious identity of Kejawen. In Banyumas district, Central Java, Aboge's socio-religious identity was built based on the Penginyongan culture, which was positioned as a subculture of Java. Languages, traditions, and religions derived from subcultures are marginally positioned, assumed to deviate, and displayed misrepresentative. Standard culture utilizes its instruments of power to maintain its hegemony by forming a stratification structure. This structure distributes other variations in diverse positions, with the epicenter points filled by the traditional culture. In the language context, Javanese bandek (Yogyakarta and Solo) is standard, beyond which it includes the North Coast, East Java, and Banyumasan is regarded as a dialect. The concept of dialect refers to the assumption of the deviation of a variation to a standard language. This study aims to map cultural activities and religious ritual practices and explores Aboge politics in shaping socio-religious identity by identifying it in Penginyongan Javanese culture. With the approach to genetic structuralism developed by Pierre Bourdieu, this study produced several findings, specifically (1) Aboge filled the gap of the Penginyongan Culture representation, whose community was generally having a feeling of inferiority as a Javanese subculture, and (2) surviving as a small group is Aboge's strategy of avoiding the penetration of standard Javanese culture, (3) The construction of the Aboge socio-religious identity that identifies Penginyongan and Demak-Pajang Islam is political, distinguishes it from standard Java, and (4) Aboge does not develop members openly to give a mystical and remarkable impression to support the economic and political interests of its elites. The main argument of this study is that Penginyongan culture, as a Javanese subculture raises feelings of inferiority for its stakeholders. Aboge then entered the space of the culture through the construction of socio-religious identities based on principles, character, and history. To strengthen the function of the Penginyongan representation, Aboge developed a differentiation strategy towards the standard Javanese (Mataram), deepening the unique and special impression by maintaining a small group and attributing local cultural symbols in the public space. Aboge's position is increasingly strategic after the emergence of regional and village development policies affirming potential local development. Through constructing this identity, Aboge transformed from a small, deviative, and traditional group into a strategic and high social reception.
