Abstract

The background to the problem in this research is that the plurality of a nation necessitates two faces for the nation's strength, one side has the potential to be constructive and on the other hand holds destructive energy. Efforts to find strategies to frame this plurality are needed to unite and minimize disputes over these differences. One of the ways taken to increase unity is through Islamic education by examining KH's multicultural thinking. Abdurrahman Wahid and Sayyid Muhammad Al-Maliki. This study aims to determine the concept of multicultural Islamic education from a comparative study of thoughts between KH. Abdurrahman Wahid and its implications in multicultural Islamic Education. This type of research islibrary research. This research is descriptive-analytical in, namely describing the existence of implied meanings, then explaining regularly all concepts that are relevant to the discussion. The approach used in this study is a historical-philosophicalapproach, namely an approach that is carried out by looking at the historical context related to time and social conditions in the past, then clearly formulating the essence underlying the concepts of multicultural Islamic education from KH's thoughts. Abdurrahman Wahid and Sayyid Muhammad Al Maliki. The research results show that; first, Abdurrahman Wahid's concept of multiculturalism is based on several main values, namely: the value of Islamic universalism, the indigenization of Islam, awareness of differences, respect for human rights (HAM), instilling a pluralistic attitude, re-actualization of normative teachings in Islam. Meanwhile, Sayyid Muhammad Al Maliki's concept of multiculturalism is based on: non-discriminatory social equality, tolerance in accepting cultural diversity and patterns of interpretation of Al-Quran texts, fighting for minority rights, opening the door of ijtihad for the dynamic and not static progress of Islam. Second, the similarities between KH. Abdurrahman Wahid and Sayyid Muhammad Al-Maliki are: Ahlussunnah wal jamaah religious leaders, moderate (wasathiyyah), and open the door of ijtihad. The differences in the views of the two can be seen from the aspects of the nation state , the defense of minorities, the response to diversity (multiethnicity), tolerance and social equality. Third, the implications for multicultural Islamic education can be seen in the aspects of material, teachers, students and learning models. Material developed in multiculturalism KH. Abdurrahman Wahid and Sayyid Muhammad Al Maliki contain values of equality, substantial democratic values, and values of gender equality.
