Abstract

The culture and the rites of the Lamaholot, East Flores that contain the knowledge system, value system, and symbol system have a position as a social modal in trying to build an interreligious dialogue and interfaith dialogue. Meanwhile, Lamaholot moslems and Lamaholot Christians and their community as the result of an intercultural meeting and the meeting between local religions and world religions can be considered as an instrument that can enliven the social modal and encourage the creation of East Flores People’s cohesivity. This study focused on three major problems, namely changes that occurred when Lamaholot rites met Islam and Catholic, the model of social cohesion owned by Lamaholot people in building interreligious and interfaith dialogues in East Flores as well as the challenges and negotiation performed in the interaction and the interreligious and interfaith dialogues. This study was based on the structural functionalism theory. This theory considered people to be holistically related to the functions of their elements, especially norms, customs, traditions, and intuitions. Those functions direct to a stable and cohesive system. The researchers approached the study objects with anthropological and sociological perspectives. The study was conducted in 11 villages in East Flores district where the people simultaneously believe in Islam and Catholic. The rites becoming the study objects were the communal rites performed by Moslems and Catholics together at the same time and in the same location involving all people in those villages. The method and data collection techniques were observation, interview, and documentation. The data analysis method/technique used in this study was interpretative qualitative. This study found two areas as the entrance gate to develop interreligious and interfaith dialogues, namely theological and praxis areas. The theological concept illustrated in the Lamaholot rites and believed by Moslems and Catholics meets and strengthens each other as well as becomes the epistemological basis for the dialogue. Allah that is worshipped by people is the Great Allah (glorious, great, and high in the sky), however, Allah is the Near (intimate) that makes a close relationship between religious people/believers. In another case, the Lamaholot rites became a medium to transmit the values that strengthen the social modal, such as a behavior that develops mutual trust, sympathetic awareness, and the obligation that strongly tightens the people of those villages. The Lamaholot rites also produced social morals that were realized in the Lamaholot people’s relationships, such as the obligation to be a part of the whole and the obligation to be atadiken (a good man) for the sake of mutual safety. With this position, religions and local cultures are one of the bases to build interreligious and interfaith dialogues as a contra-narration against ideologies of intolerance.
