Abstract

The government passed Law Number 16 of 2019 concerning Amendments to Law Number 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage on October 14, 2019. In this law, the minimum age for marriage has changed, from 16 years for women and 19 years for men, to 19 years for both. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of students of the Islamic Family Law study program, Faculty of Sharia and Law, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This research is included in field research using a normative-juridical approach and the nature of the research is descriptive-analytic. This study uses primary and secondary data sources. Primary data was obtained through in-depth interviews with six students from various batches in the Islamic Family Law study program. Meanwhile, secondary data was obtained through books, journals, and data relevant to this research topic. Data analysis uses an inductive method by analyzing things that are specific to general. The results of this study indicate that the majority of students of the Islamic Family Law Study Program, Faculty of Sharia and Law UIN Sunan Kalijaga agree with the change in the minimum age for marriage, from 19 years for men and 16 years for women, changed to 19 years for both. The reasons and rationale of students in responding to changes in the minimum age limit for marriage are divided into three factors, namely health, maturity, and finance. On the maturity factor, students think that at that age the prospective bride and groom are considered to have matured in their emotional development and way of thinking. Meanwhile, on financial factors, the age of 19 years has completed the nine-year compulsory education level so that they can find and have a job, as well as managing household finances.
