Abstract

Music is a close universal phenomenon to human civilization, which cannot be separated from time to time. As a complex entity, music has a very significant role and influence in creating a change for a civilization. Therefore, the discourse on music is very important to be centered and focused on. In this research, the researcher will highlight in a comprehensive and in-depth manner related to the phenomenon of Kiai Kanjeng spiritual music - by using Seyyed Hossein Nasr's perspective on spiritual music itself. This study is conducted by the researcher using qualitative research based on observation and library research. This research will focus on three main questions that have been formulated by the researcher; (1) What is the form of Kiai Kanjeng's spiritual music?; (2) How is the contextualization of Seyyed Hossein Nasr's view on the phenomenon of Kiai Kanjeng music?; and (3) Why Kiai Kanjeng's music could be categorized as spiritual music?. To make the researcher easier to explain the three main questions, the researcher used two methods of data analysis; (1) contextual interpretation. Contextual interpretation is a method that seeks to interpret a concept and theory to be able to find and produce new meanings more objectively with phenomena that occur in today's contemporary context; (2) Description. In general, descriptive analysis is closely related to the type of philosophical research approach. In this study, the researcher found several essential findings, there are; (1) The quality of the lyrics, which are presented by Kiai in many of his musical works, always contain a deep message for listeners as an effort to connect them to the highest spirituality, which in this case is Allah SWT; (2) Musical Quality, in terms of work, Kiai Kanjeng does not limit himself to just one particular genre. This is very possible because the gamelan created by Novi Budianto has the possibility of exploring various genres such as; pop, rock, dangdut, karawitan, Qasidah, to jazz. If looked at by the form presented by Kiai Kanjeng in some of his musical works, it is classified as a type of spiritual music because it absorbs elements of traditional, classical, and folk (popular) music as well as itself. Thus, it means that categorically, Kiai Kanjeng's music is spiritual in the context of Seyyed Hossein Nasr's thought.
