Abstract

This study aims to discuss the physics concepts used in scouting activities in Baden Powell's book Scouting for Boys. Scouting education becomes a mandatory extracurricular in elementary and secondary education. In this regard, there are still many perceptions that scouting activities only teach clapping and singing, even though if viewed from various sides, there are many benefits that students get when participating in scouting activities, including the application of physics concepts in the practice of scouting activities. In this research, the researcher reveal how the scouting materials, especially those written by Baden Powell, also contain scientific knowledge, including physics. This research is library research. The research steps carried out in this study were 1) tracing primary and secondary sources, 2) classifying data according to research objectives, 3) data processing, 4) data analysis, and 5) drawing research conclusions. In this study, we used two data sources, namely primary data sources and secondary data sources. The Scouting for Boys book used in this study has two important positions, namely, as a primary data source and as a research object. In addition, this study also uses secondary data sources, which are sources that provide support during the research. The collected data was then subjected to content analysis techniques. The results of this study indicate that many scouting activities in the Scouting for Boys book are in practice related to the application of physics concepts. These activities are scouting activities related to the practice of applying the concept of measurement; activities at camp related to the concept of heat and thermodynamics; the concept of simple planes and pressure in the use of axes; the concept of friction in fire-making techniques; the concept of sound propagation; the concept of magnetism in the use of a compass; as well as the concept of Newton's law in rowing a boat.
