Abstract

The concept of wasatiyyah Islam is still a hot topic of discussion and is considered the right solution in response to radical and extreme attitudes that are still developing in Indonesia. M. Quraish Shihab as one of the Muslim scholars and commentators in Indonesia who has had a major influence on the development of Islamic education in Indonesia has become a figure used in studying wasatiyyah Islam. While Islamic education is one of the relevant means in studying Islamic wasatiyyah. The aims of this study were: (1) to know the concept of Islamic wasatiyyah according to M. Quraish Shihab, (2) to know the characteristics of Islamic thought wasatiyyah M. Quraish Shihab, (3) to know the relevance of the concept of Islam wasatiyyah M. Quraish Shihab with Islamic Education in Indonesia. The type of research used is library research descriptive-analytical. The approach used is the approach of philosophy and sociology. The data collection technique used is documentation. The data sources used are primary data sources in the form of books by M. Quraish Shihab and other secondary data. The data analysis technique in this study is content analysis. The conclusions in this study are: (1) The Islamic concept of wasatiyyah in the view of M. Quraish Shihab is an attitude of balance both in worldly and spiritual aspects. Not exaggerating and not reducing. Meanwhile, applying it requires qualified knowledge, replacing emotions with love, and being careful. (2) The characteristics of M. Quraish Shihab's thoughts about wasatiyyah Islam are strong arguments, broad insights, in-depth, moderate, and contextual studies (3) The relevance of M. Quraish Shihab's wasatiyyah Islamic concept to Islamic education in Indonesia is found in the goals and curriculum of Islamic education. That is balance in the aspects of the world and the hereafter.
