Abstract

Nowadays interfaith relations’ dynamics occur in response to the situations and conditions of the society. This research studies interfaith relations that were narrated in an Islamic-discoursed contemporary novel. A novel is prepared with explicit and implicit messages that represent the author’s certain discourse. The Islamicdiscoursed novels being reviewed in this study were written by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, Asma Nadia, and Abidah El Khalieqy who are famous with their best sellers. The study viewed how far interfaith values are exposed in attempts to promote inclusive interfaith relations within a society in these novels. The discourse conveyance through a novel brings a timely color. The research tried to answer four questions. First, how do Islamic-discoursed contemporary novels in Indonesia develop, and what media do the authors choose to instil interfaith values to their readers? Second, why are there interfaith narrations in Islamicdiscoursed contemporary novels in Indonesia? Third, how do Islamic-discoursed contemporary novels in Indonesia articulate interfaith theme? Fourth, how suitable are the interfaith narrations in the Islamic-discoursed contemporary novels with interfaith issues in Indonesia. Representation theory from Stuart Hall and theory of dramaturgy from Erving Goffman on social life is a series of drama performed in front stage and back stage were employed in this study. The study concluded four discoveries. First, Islamicdiscoursed contemporary novels began from Sufism literature and pesantren one. And this was what the three writers chose to instil interfaith values. Second, the presence of interfaith narration in the novels was due to religious ideology which was the spirit of da’wah through Islamic narration. The existence of “fragrant novel” and secular novel in every era made novel production a room of contests. Third, each author presented an interfaith reflection in their novel. Three interfaith-value delivery categories comprised normative, responsive, and confrontational. Interfaith relation discourse aspects, on the other hand, were described in three forms (i.e. contradictorily, subordinately, and coordinately). Each discourse represented the shape of interfaith relations being narrated in the novel. Fourth, the narrations of Islamic-discoursed contemporary novel coincide with interfaith issues. This suitability could be seen in the inclusive encounter narration, far from exclusive narration, when describing Islam. Theoretic reflection in this study shows that interfaith relations pattern that narrates inclusive encounter could appear in the narration of exclusive texts. Interfaith promotion could be multifaced comprising a combination between inclusive and exclusive narrations, and ending in a goal that boils down to an exclusive genuine single face.
