Abstract

Viewing from sociological aspects, this dissertation traced everyday life interaction of Larantuka inhabitants whose traditions and religions are different. The research aimed to perceive the Catholic’s acceptance of Islam and Protestant followers, to uncover the Nostra Aetate inspiration for interfaith relations of Catholic, Islam and Protestant, and to study interfaith reciprocity of Catholic, Islam and Protestant in Larantuka. The objects of study in this dissertation were the attitude, behavior and religious-appreciation. Primary data comprised field-observation results and structured interviews with informants (i.e. religious figures, government representatives, women, the young) of various religions. Informants were determined under particular consideration, i.e. inter-religiondialogue activist and observer were among others, by purposive sampling technique. Secondary data, on the other hand, constituted theme-research-related references. The researcher studied documents and carried out interviews with Catholic, Islam and Protestant who live in Larantuka. Qualitative interpretative method was employed to analyze the data. The whole data were classified, compared and interpreted. Dialogue and reciprocity theory was used to analyze interfaith relations of Catholic, Islam and Protestant. Field observation result showed the spirit to respect each other and the acknowledgement of the importance and of the great value of one another. The study drew three conclusions. First, the people of Larantuka have basically been opened to accept and welcome religions beside Catholic. Other people and other religions were given freedom to practice their belief in Larantuka. Second, though far from perfection, Nostra Aetate has inspired interfaith togetherness of Catholic, Islam and Protestant. The Catholic’s rivalry spirit has turned into a dialogue spirit. Third, the spirit of interfaith reciprocity of Catholic, Islam and Protestant was implemented in the form of collaboration, assistance, respect and acknowledgement of others’ dignity and identity in accordance with the individual’s religion and tradition background. The custom and tradition in Laranruka, namely the spirit of “Tulun Talin” (to support those in need or to help each other), proved to encourage the people to accept and appreciate Nostra Aetate values from which the foundation of civilization and common-good was built.
