Abstract

The phenomenon of intolerance that is happening today is of course something that is being noticed in all parts of the world. Problems related to intolerance have even received more attention from international organizations, namely the United Nations (UN). This is due to seeing the many cases related to intolerance throughout the world, including in Indonesia. Departing from this phenomenon, in the internet era as it is today, innovation in spreading messages of tolerance can be done by utilizing social media, one of the media that is widely used today is Instagram. The Instagram account @Islamidotco exists as a medium to spread dakwah and religious information in general and support tolerant practices in society. Therefore, this research was conducted by raising the issue of what message of tolerance the @islamidotco account wants to convey. Therefore the researchers focused on the purpose of this study, namely to find signs in several posters on the @Islamidotco Instagram account, so that they could reveal the message of tolerance to be conveyed through these posters. The theory used in this study refers to Roland Barthes' semiotic theory which divides the meaning of signs through 3 stages: denotation, connotation, and myth. This research method uses a qualitative research approach with a descriptive type. To obtain the data in this study, the researchers carried out the process of observation and documentation. In the data analysis method, Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis technique is used, which divides semiotics into 2 systems which are commonly called denotation as the meaning of the first stage of the sign and connotation as the meaning of the second stage of the sign. Screenshots of images on posters on the Instagram account @islamidotco which are considered to be able to convey a message of interfaith tolerance for the 2021 period, will be analyzed using the denotation stage, after which an analysis will be carried out through the connotation stage, then conclusions will be drawn through the last stage, namely myth. The results of this study indicate that there are 10 posters with denotation, connotation, and mythical meanings uploaded to the Instagram account @Islamidotco in 2021 which contain messages related to inter-religious tolerance. From the results of the analysis with the stages of denotation, connotation, and myth, this study concludes that the illustrations and text on the posters contained in the upload of the @Islamidotco account in 2021 have an interest in spreading the message of interfaith tolerance, with there are 4 points in it, namely interreligious tolerance by how to do good and share regardless of religion, respecting religious differences, tolerance between religions through history, and tolerance between religions based on local wisdom. This is intended as a form of education and a reminder to the audience of how important it is to carry out the practice of inter-religious tolerance. With an attractive poster appearance with illustrations that are the focal point of the poster itself, and there are da'wah values in it, it becomes the most important element in attracting the interest of an audience of Instagram users.
