Abstract

The end of Jawi Islamic Scholarship? Kitab Jawi, Qur'anic exegesis, and politics in Indonesia," in Rainbows of Malay Literature and Beyond: Festschrift in Honour of Professor Md. Salleh Yaapar, ed. Lalita Sinha, Pulau Penang: Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia, 2011.<br/><br/>In this article, the author argues that the Youth Pledge on 28 October 1928, in which the bahasa Indonesia was declared as the national language, was the important momentum that triggered Indonesian Muslim scholars to write Qur'anic exegesis in Indonesian using Latin (Rumi) script, rather than in Jawi. However, the author does not argue that this is also the case with Qur'anic exegesis using pegon (Javanese language using Arabic script) or Jawoe (Acehnese language using Arabic script). He does not argue also that this was the case of other Islamic literature, like that of fiqh, tasawuf, and kalam. This is due to the fact that Indonesianisation has brought about Latinisation (Rumi-isation)--the use of Latin/Rumi script--of the established national language as well as most of the local languages.
