Abstract

This study aims to determine the effects of crossword puzzle in improving the students’ ability to memorize vocabulary in English subject. The subjects in this study were the third students of SD Negeri Kotagede I Yogyakarta amounting to 22 students and divided into an experimental group were 11 students and a control group of 11 students. The experimental group obtained treatment in learning English they were taught using crossword puzzle while the control group did not taught without using crossword puzzle. The design of experiments used was two independent groups with pretest-posttest design. The data collection method used was the ability to memorize vocabulary test and the analytical method used was two independent samples test. The result of the research was indicated that the Mann-Withney U value showed 27.500 with p = 0.03 (p < 0.05) mean that the crossword puzzle effective in improving students ability to memorize vocabulary.
