Abstract

This research is aimed to explain the contribution made by some Muslim scholars to decolonization of knowledge, particularly decolonization of social sciences, especially in Southeast Asia (Indonesia and Malaysia). Decolonization of social science among Muslim scholars is interesting because of three reasons: first, it is an emerging epistemic trend in the last thirty years and currently has become more relevant in the last decade; second, Muslim scholars’ contribution in this field has been neglected; and third, as Mignolo said, it is the consequence of the Bandung Conference in 1955, in which Indonesia took major innitiative. Using the term “muslim scholar” rather than “Islamic scholar”, this paper focus on person, rather than her/his belief. Muslim scholar may or may not use Islam as their source of inspiration in the decolonization of social sciences. To explain this, I use Foucault’s theory of knowledge and power, Boaventura de Sousa Santos’ theory of ecologies of knowledges, Shiv Visvanathan’s cognitive justice, and B.L. Hall and R. Tandon’s knowledge democracy.
