Abstract

In Indonesia, leaders of so-called “New Religious Movements” (NRM) pose challenges to and criticize Islamic tradition and theology. Indonesia’s dynamic majority Muslim country is an interesting case to study, in which criticism of Islam is practiced. This article discusses an NRM called the “Eden group”, founded by Lia Eden, who is said to have received divine messages from the Archangel Gabriel. This chap-ter describes a book by Lia’s devotee, Dunuk Luxfiati. The book contains criticism of Islam and the way the Eden group broke some Islamic taboos and norms.
