Abstract

This study aims to determine the description of alexithymia in male students of Javanese ethnic background. Four informants involved in this study. The criteria for informants in this study were selected based on two conditions, namely: male students and having or a Javanese ethnic background. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach, namely with a collective case study. In collecting data, this research uses semi-structured interview data collection techniques. Meanwhile, the data analysis technique uses three stages which include data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings are indications of alexithymia that appear in research informants which include five points including difficulty in identifying or recognizing an emotion that is felt, feelings that are felt when emotions are peaking, obstacles in expressing emotions orally about what is felt to other people, how to resolve a problem, and entertainment preferences that involve emotional aspects. Then, regarding the factors in this study there are four factors that influence the formation of alexithymia including parenting and family, the learning process from peers and the environment, the demands of peers and the community environment to adjust to the norms and values of being a man, and Javanese cultural background . and finally regarding the impact that the informant felt was divided into four points, namely inhibited verbal or verbal expression of emotions, difficulty or uncertainty when identifying an emotion, tending to prioritize rational thoughts in solving problems, and tending to ignore as a way of solving problems. An interesting finding in this study is that most of the informants agree that it is normal for a man to be a strong figure, not crybaby, not spoiled, ignorant, not too emotional or showing an emotional side and so on. For the informant, this was appropriate and in accordance with the cultural background of the informant's origin, namely the culture of the Javanese tribe.
