Abstract

Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) is one of the K-Pop musicians who is considered to convey the value of inclusivity through one of their music videos titled "Permission to Dance". While the negative assumptions about them are also not small. Hence, this research aims to uncover and analyze the reception of their fans in Indonesia about the value of inclusivity in the music video. With the fact that their Indonesian fans are very diverse and culturally different from South Korea. This research uses Stuart Hall's Encoding & Decoding Theory. This research is qualitative research with a critical paradigm and reception analysis method. The result found that their fans interpreted the value of inclusiveness in the lyrics, visualization, and choreography in the music video. There are two audience decoding positions, dominant hegemony and negotiation. The decoding position of fans is influenced by individual difference perspective and social relation perspective. Moreover, it was found that the inclusivity of BTS was also a soft power. Therefore, it is possible that their fans have been unconsciously manipulated by BTS and their music, but their fans also show that they are active as pop audiences by integrating meaning as individuals and continuing meaning as a fandom.
