Abstract

Citronellal is the main component of citronella oil reaching 35.97%. Citronellal can be converted into menthol through two reaction stages, namely the cyclization of citronellal to produce isopulegol with the an acid catalyst and followed by the isopulegol hydrogenation process to produce menthol using a metal catalyst. Cu/Bentonite catalysts have a bifunctional effect of acids and metals that can be used in the reaction of one pot system¬ citronellal to menthol. The purpose of this study is the characterization Cu/Bentonite catalysts based on FTIR and XRD instruments and analyzing the products resulting from the synthesis reaction of one pot system citronellal into menthol using Cu/Bentonite catalysts. The preparation process of Cu/Bentonite catalysts is carried out using the wet impregnation method. Cu/Bentonite catalysts were successfully synthesized based on the identification of the FTIR spectrum with the presence of absorption at wavelengths of 1049.28 cm-1 and 694.37 cm-1 indicating the Si-O group in bentonite and the XRD diffractogram indicating the presence of Cu at the absorption peak of 2θ = 43.20° and 2θ = 50.70°. The results of the reaction of one pot system synthesis of citronellal to menthol were analyzed using GC-MS which showed the resulting product as a menthone of 0.11%.
