Abstract

Internet use in Indonesia continues to increase and figures show a high penetration rate (77.02%) in 2021-2022 and most users are students. In the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of the internet is a necessity due to limitations in physical contact, including in the field of education. Students have a high risk of experiencing internet addiction because many academic and non-academic needs are accessed on the internet. The research was conducted to compare the level of tendency towards internet addiction disorder in college students in big cities and small towns, whether there is a significant difference, and knowing the level of tendency towards internet addiction disorder among students in the two samples as well as knowing and comparing aspects of the tendency towards internet addiction disorder to see which aspects need to be controlled for students in small towns and big cities in utilizing the internet. This study uses a comparative quantitative approach by measuring the tendency variable for internet addiction disorder using a scale instrument based on Kimberly Young's aspect theory. Data analysis techniques are used with the help of the IBM SPSS 25.0 program. The category results show that the trend level for Internet addiction disorder at UIN Sunan Kalijaga and UIN Salatiga is in the moderate category. Based on the Man Whitney U Nonparametric Statistical Test, the results obtained a significance value of p = 0.646. (p ≥ 0.05) and Hypothesis is rejected so that it can be seen that there is no significant difference between the tendency of internet addiction disorder among students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and UIN Salatiga. Based on the independent sample t-test statistical test on every aspect of internet addiction disorder tendencies, there was no significant difference in both UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and UIN Salatiga, except for the aspect of attention being focused on the internet with a sig p = 0.002 (p  0.05). It can be concluded, that the level of the tendency for internet addiction disorder among students in big cities and small towns does not show a significant difference, which means that wherever they are located, as long as they have good access to the internet, the potential for internet addiction is the same, so many parties need to pay attention to addressing or minimizing the impact negatives of internet, especially the tendency of internet addiction disorder among students.
