Abstract

Natural disasters often occur in Indonesia, including volcanic eruptions. Mitigation can be done to reduce the impact of volcanic eruptions. Mitigation can be learned from training or always monitoring the information provided by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). Children are the successors of a nation that is prone to be affected by disasters, including volcanic eruptions. Children can learn about mitigating volcanic eruptions at school. Books are one of the learning media. Picture story books are learning media that can include material that is difficult for children to understand and make it easier to understand. This study aims to determine the development of picture story books as eruptive volcano mitigation learning for kindergarten children and to determine the effectiveness of picture story books as eruptive volcano mitigation learning for kindergarten children. This study uses the R&D method with the Dick and Carey model and is summarized into five stages, namely needs analysis, material analysis, product development, expert validation, and pilot testing. The validation experts involved in this study were children's language experts, material experts I, material experts II, and media experts. The trial was conducted at Al-Fadhilah Kindergarten involving 25 students. The results showed that product development was carried out by means of needs analysis, material analysis, product development, expert validation, and trials. Expert validation involved child language experts with 97% results, material experts I 92%, material experts II 98%, and media experts 88%. The effectiveness of picture story books can be seen from the results of small and large scale trials. The results of the pretest and posttest of small-scale trials were 60% and 93%, while the large-scale trials were 65% and 88%, this stated that the product of developing picture book books as a volcano eruption mitigation lesson for kindergarten children was effective for use by kindergarten children.
