Abstract

Low financial literacy skills have an impact on a lack of someone in managing finances so that problems arise that lead to wasteful and consumptive attitudes. The foundation for money management is important to be taught from an early age, where the foundation is built by teaching financial literacy. Learning financial literacy makes parents the frontline who must actively act as educators, role models and also motivators. The research objective is to describe the role of parents in learning financial literacy in early childhood. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The research subjects were five families with children aged 5-7 years living in Sidorejo Ponggok Village, Blitar, East Java. Research data collection used interviews, observation and documentation which were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model with three stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions. Research data will be tested with trust techniques, namely triangulation of sources, extending participation and peer checking. The results of the study show that: first, the role of parents in learning financial literacy is as an educator, role model and motivator. The role of educators, parents are obliged to teach the value and function of money, simple concepts, differences in needs and wants, habituation of saving, attitude of responsibility. The exemplary role of parents exemplifies saving and a responsible attitude through daily activities. The motivator role of parents encourages children with action and praise. Second, the introduction of the value and function of money by means of counterfeit money media, shopping and letting children manage money. introduction of simple concepts with counting, comparison, conversation, question and answer. Differences in needs and wants with question and answer conversations, demonstrations. The habit of saving by setting an example, saving together, appreciation, buying nice piggy banks. Formation of an attitude of responsibility with habituation, appreciation, conversation, role models, conversations about managing money. Third, the implications of learning financial literacy for children are that children understand the value and function of money, children understand the concept of much or less and cause and effect, children understand differences in needs and wants, children are accustomed to saving, and form a child's responsible attitude in using money.
