Abstract

This research examines the interpretation of the symbol of the King's alms in the garebeg celebration which was carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is important to know the implementation of the King's alms during a pandemic. The reason for researchers to study this phenomenon is because the implementation is very different. This makes the views of the Abdi Dalem and the community also differ in interpreting it with various indications between the Abdi Dalem and the community. This research is a qualitative research using a phenomenological interpretive approach that takes a case from the Raja alms tradition in garebeg celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic using three techniques, namely observation, interviews and documentation. Then analyzed using the symbolic interpretive theory of the model and the model for Clifford Geertz. The results of this study, researchers found significant differences in the implementation of alms King. Different procedures, even during the pandemic, the King's alms were carried out in a limited way without the community. This is what makes the development of the mediatization of the Palace as an intermediary for the spread of barakah. Apart from the change in the meaning of the gunungan symbol when it was removed as a symbol of the King's alms. The results of this study indicate that the interpretation of the symbol of the King's alms according to Abdi Dalem is a form of generosity of the Sultan to his people as well as a medium of Islamic da'wah which means simplicity, unity, balance, harmony and Manunggaling Kawula Gusti. The interpretation of a symbol is not formed through mental coercion, but grows because of the expressionism and thinking ability of the Abdi Dalem himself. The emergence of the function of social structure in the meaning of the symbol of the King's alms between the Abdi Dalem and society in general, namely the symbol of a public tradition that everyone can interpret, the tradition of the king's alms has not been separated from its elements of origin, the greatest motivation of each individual and the existence of a unique factual meaning in its tradition. In addition, researchers saw that the media was used as an intermediary for distributing the King's alms blessings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
