Abstract

The term 'development' has become the dominant ideological discourse in Indonesia, especially since the New Order government, by taking the terms 'stability' and 'order' as its goal. On the one hand, development encourages the maximization of living standards and material benefits in certain respects. On the other hand, development has impacted the ecological crisis and women's vitality. As a legacy of post-World War II recovery, developmentalism tends to assume women's and society's needs in post-colonial countries, such as Indonesia, by Western standards. Local traditions, religions, and belief systems are often considered backward and a barrier to progress. So instead of having the power to recover, women and Third World life are often positioned as objects of attention that need to be “given”—which pattern affirms the colonial discourse itself. This thesis is the result of grounded research based on feminist ethnography. The main focus of this thesis is the thoughts of Nissa Wargadipura and the Pesantren Ekologi Ath-Thaariq, which she initiated. In academic conversation, the analysis of this thesis is at least (hopefully) capable of: (1) demonstrating the importance of ecofeminism's ethical foothold in agrarian collective movements which still heavily rely on masculinity; (2) offering the Islamic ecofeminism ethics to respond to various situations of socio-ecological inequality, especially those targeting women and vulnerable groups; (3) carrying out an "axiological challenge" to the role and function of pesantren—which are still believed to be—as a pillar of civilization and social change. In Indonesia, ecofeminism emerged as a grassroots response to capitalistic developmentalism, leading to many socio-ecological problems. The idea of a pesantren for sovereignty was born from these encounters and struggles for land. The historicity of pesantren as a community educational institution cum a pillar of social change is the main reason why the ecofeminism movement in this study uses the pesantren form. The values acculturation of ecofeminism and pesantren form an Islamic ecofeminism ethic based on iman kesalingan (mutual faith) as an effort towards ecological justice—which my thesis offers. The process of eco-theology distinguishes Islamic ecofeminism (in Indonesia) from previous ecofeminism thought. In addition, by analyzing the post-colonial agrarian political movements of the pesantren, this thesis automatically explores the pesantren ethics in breaking up unequal power relations between humans and among other living entities; instead of continuing the patriarchal tradition and kiai-centric system that has so far been attached to the pesantren itself.
