Abstract

The philosophy of life in Suluk Gatholoco through Franz Magnis Suseno's Javanese ethics approach is intended to help achieve its purpose as a foundation for a wise and beneficial life for humans and their surroundings. Departing from the current human gap, most of which are still too busy with their new activities so that they neglect ethics and morals in life, this research is expected to be able to realise a balance in the order of society in order to avoid things that can cause imbalance and instability in life. This type of research uses a descriptive qualitative method, which aims to obtain a more in-depth description and holistic understanding based on the natural situation of the phenomenon to be studied, and the author acts as a key instrument to obtain the data needed. Also based on literature (libarary research) which is described as a research method in which data sources are processed in the process of searching, collecting, and analysing to be presented in the form of a literature research report containing various topics needed. Data analysis uses discourse analysis which leads to a detailed and in-depth description of what is actually in the content of the Suluk Gatholoco text. Franz Magnis Suseno's Javanese ethics approach is applied in the philosophy of life of Suluk Gatholoco as a way to find peace and harmony in life. From the view of Javanese ethics, human life is set to achieve a balance between several main elements, namely goodness, truth, loyalty, justice, and compassion. Therefore, humans in living their lives must fulfil the obligations given by God, namely to seek a balance between good and bad, truth and falsehood, justice and injustice, love and hatred, and loyalty and disloyalty. If all of these have been fulfilled, then humans will be able to achieve the desired welfare.
