Abstract

The change and development of industrial revolution 4.0 era and society 5.0 era as well as the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic impacts worldwide has accelerated internet-based digitalization process, big data and artificial intelligence in almost every aspect of human’s life. The situation has triggered new challenges and demands on people around the world, and parents – in the sense of raising and educating their children – are no exception. This study aimed to invent a new parenting format which is adaptive, dynamic and transcendent. Utilizing a two-step qualitative method (i.e. systematic literature review and exploratory factor analysis) a new parenting construct named Holistic transcendent parenting was uncovered. The new construct was developed from transcendent parenting theory initiated by Sun Sun Lim by elaborating transcendent parenting, self-transcendence, and spiritual transcendence theories. Holistic Transcendent parenting could be applied in two different ways: direct and indirect. The former included a transformation of knowledge and training in good and proper digital media utilization skill, and the application of spiritual and religious methods some of which were those appeared in the Al-Qur’an in the episodes of Lukman, prophet Ibrahim and the family of Imran. Holistic Transcendent Parenting was applied indirectly by placing the parents themselves real model with adequate level of Holistic transcendent. The Holistic transcendent level of parents was measured in Holistic Transcendent Scale (HTS) with 7 indicators and 25 instruments as follow: 1) extrinsic-to-intrinsic change of motivation and moral-guided life; 2) a change from individual ego to broader fulfillment outside himself and life driven by admiration and deep happiness; 3) comfort in prayer and universality; 4) connectedness; 5) parents’ digital media utilization; 6) parents’ knowledge and experience of digital media utilization; 7) parents’ viewpoints of benefit and loss of digital media in parenting process.
