Abstract

This study examines early childhood parenting practices developed by online community members based on Salafism values reproduced in the animated web series Nussa. The aim is to describe the ideological construction on which the parenting is based; describe parenting practices developed; and find answers to community members’ interest in Salafism-based parenting. The study was conducted qualitatively by constructing understanding, motivation, and parenting practices developed by community members in response to the reproduction of Salafism in Nussa animation. The study was conducted on online community members in two groups of Nussa animation on Facebook. The data collection technique was carried out through observation of twenty accounts of group members of Nussa animation on Facebook. Eight of them, all of whom were female, were developed through in-depth interviews. Based on the research findings, it was concluded that Nussa animation was used as an orientation for early childhood parenting so as to produce popular Islamic authoritative parenting practices. However, parenting is practiced in various ways according to its social class. Based on the study conducted, it was found that there was a shift in the diversity of popular Islamism from absolute puritanism to adaptive puritanism. This shift opens the opportunity to find common ground between Salafism, modernism, and globalism. In particular, this shift can also bridge Salafis’ identity in early childhood care and the demands of 21st-century learning competencies.
