Abstract

This research was motivated by data on the distribution of empathy scales and interviews with guidance and counseling teachers at the Bantul National Vocational School, Yogyakarta, which explained that there were some students who had low empathy scores. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of group counseling with cinema therapy to increase the empathy of class X students at SMK Nasional Bantul Yogyakarta. This study used an experimental method with a quasi-experimental research type using a nonequivalent control group design. The population of this research was class X students of the Bantul National Vocational School. Sampling of this study used a purposive sampling technique. This study began with filling out the pre-test, then the experimental group was given group counseling treatment with cinema therapy while the control group was given group counseling treatment with powerpoint media and then ended with filling out the post-test. Data analysis in this study used the Mann-Whitney U test. The results of this study stated that the hypothesis was accepted as evidenced by the Asymp.Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.001 < 0.05, which means that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted, so it was concluded that group counseling with cinema therapy is effective to increase student empathy.
