Abstract

The concept of an ideology is brought to life by incorporating components that have the power to invoke memories of past experiences, situations, and social conditions, which aims to express anticipation of the future, and is expected to be represented by a symbol. Therefore, a symbol is always associated with signs given by cultural, situational, and conditional traits. The Sleman Regency's Regional Government emblem incorporates diverse visual elements endowed with specific meanings. These meanings have been documented and disseminated through the Sleman Regional Library and Archives Service. However, there exists a significant degree of ambiguity regarding the overarching significance of the symbol and the process through which these symbols generate meaning. This research uses a qualitative approach to examine the visual representation and meaning conveyed by the symbol of the Sleman Regency Government. The interpretation of the visual elements within the symbol is based on Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The research findings reveal that the Coat of Arms of the Sleman Regency Government consists of three distinct components, which collectively combine visual elements to convey the meaning of a well-structured life for the people of Sleman. This symbolism represents their devotion, cultural richness, prosperity, and resilience, encompassing all its associated virtues.
