Abstract

This study aims to describe the cultural adaptation of Minangkabau ethnic married couples and the host culture in Yogyakarta in the theory of language relativity. Data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observation and documentation involving three married couples of Minangkabau ethnicity as the main source of research information. Data analysis techniques used include: data reduction, data presentation and conclusions. In this study, it was concluded that language plays an important role in forming perceptions that language does not cause significant differences in perception, thinking, or behavior. The cultural adaptation that occurs is influenced by several factors, including; personal communication factors, host social communication, ethnic social communication, environment, and predisposition. In the process of cultural adaptation, all informants went through the stages of cultural adaptation to the host culture. Starting from the planning phase, where informants prepare themselves physically, mentally and communication skills. Then the honeymoon phase, where the informants feel the enthusiasm to learn a new culture. Likewise with the relativity of language in the formation of perceptions of newcomers. Next is the frustration phase where the fascination with new things turns into frustration so it is very important to understand cultural and language differences. Then the readjustment phase where newcomers begin to try to readjust themselves to their new environment and culture. In the resolution phase, all informants chose full participation. Informants participate fully to maximize the results of the interaction.
