Abstract

The phenomenon of homosexuals one of them is same-sex loving women called lesbians. This group is included as a minority and in its journey is often considered deviant because it does not comply with the norms and religious rules that are currently in force. This research aims to find out the response of Muslim Lesbian teenagers in Yogyakarta to the stigma and discrimination they experience in the social environment in heteronormativity society and the strategies carried out by Muslim Lesbian teenagers in Yogyakarta in an effort to maintain their sexual orientation in the social environment in heteronormativity society. This research applies qualitative methods with descriptive narratives. Data collection is done by means of interviews, observation and documentation. At the interview stage, the informants who became the subjects of this research consisted of 6 informants. The informants were selected with special criteria using purposive sampling technique, namely being a Muslim teenager and having been a lesbian for at least two years. In the analysis process, this research applies the adaptation theory carried by John W. Bennett and Richard Lazarus' Appraisal Theory. The results of this study explain, first, the self response given by lesbian teenagers in Yogyakarta is divided into two namely affective response (emotional response) and apathy (indifference). Second, the survival strategy carried out by Muslim lesbian teenagers is to adapt. In the behavioral adaptation strategy carried out is by manipulating the sexual identity possessed, covering lesbian activities or symbols and benefiting others. The strategy of tactical adaptation by using social media as a place to show lesbian existence and the process adaptation strategy is carried out by the process of coming in (self-acceptance) and coming out (openness) to people around the identity that is owned.
