Abstract

Postmodern era is marked with various advancements in many aspect, one of which is in communication and information technology, resulting in a new culture of interaction in society. Pandemic is one of the factors that limits people interaction, hence the use of social media became the alternative to these limitation. WhatsApp is able to survive and become one of the answers as well as a place for people to stay connected. With the emoticon feature, WhatsApp and unicode works together in developing emoticon character, researching and updating emoticon persistently so it stays relevant. Thousands of emoticon characters has been released by WhatsApp and are divided into multiple category sections, one of it is religious emoticon characters. Religious emoticons became one of the characters that continue to be used in some religious communities to communicate in social media. In this study, religious emoticons were observed using the theory of Triadic Semiotics analysis proposed by Charles Sanders Pierce. In an effort to examine the meaning and use of religious emoticons from the perspective of the sociology of religion, data were collected from interviews with WhatsApp users who belong to the religious community. This study applied a qualitative method with descriptive techniques, in which the data was collected using a semi-structured interview method with netnographic studies, which is a study method to understand society and its culture through the internet or social media. The selection of informants were selected by applying techniques of purposive sampling, limited to students, precisely consisting of students and fresh graduates as a postmodern communicator who has been actively using WhatsApp since 2016 minimum. Based on the research that has been conducted, the results obtained regarding the meaning and use of religious emoticons. First, as a representation of religious symbols, an alternative to utterance of a religion through symbols, as well as an instrument to highlight important points in the context of broadcast messages in group messaging provided by WhatsApp. Second, related to the triadic semiotic analysis pyramid, as arbitrary symbols, emoticons were analyzed through three stages, namely Representment, Interpretant, and Object, the interpretation and meaning of religious emoticons on WhatsApp is not always the same since it is influenced by personal experience and the knowledge of each interpreter. Thus, this research reaches the point of the openness of knowledge horizons in the context of the interpretation of religious symbols and religious emoticons.
